The reimagined mosaic of the National Museum / German Foundation and artists in “Skënderbej” square for biodiversity, Ambassador Bergner appeal for nature

Is it possible to live on earth, without the chain of flora and fauna? An exhibition in Skenderbej Square sheds light on the ecosystem not as a procedure, but as a whole.

Can you reimagine the mosaic of the National Museum that no longer reflects the proposed history of Albania, but the wealth of flora and fauna? The German foundation “Heinrich Boll” has collaborated with artists and organizations to give a central space to animals and birds, endangered, rare and key elements of the ecosystem and therefore life on earth. The goal is for citizens to become aware of them, to understand their importance, so that this weight of knowledge and care is not only for specialists in the field.

The director of the foundation said that mobilizing people's emotions, desires, work and commitment is key if we want to protect nature. In this case, the mosaic was used as a “weapon” for the campaign “Albania is biodiversity”

In this light, the German ambassador in Tirana, Karl Bergner, speaking about these assets of Albania, said: These assets are not guaranteed, the pressures from illegal constructions, unsustainable tourism, land use and climate change are increasing. The question is not whether Albania will develop, of course it does and it should develop, economically and in tourism. The question is what type of development will it choose, development that consumes or that protects natural capital. Environmental criteria, legal order, transparent procedures, meaningful public participation are very important, they are necessary in the context of integration.

Seeing nature not as a technicality, but as vital to life on earth, the mosaic designed by Kleidi Eski takes shape through thousands of pieces of glass. In addition to the exhibition and the mosaic “Albania is Biodiversity”, an education and awareness program on biodiversity, with discussions, film screenings, cultural activities and many others accompany the exhibition, including the theology of ecology in the Abrahamic traditions.
