Polish archaeologists have made a very important discovery in Montenegro. According to Daily Mail they have discovered 2 royal palaces said to belong to King Bardhyl and Queen Teuta of the Illyrians.

Although one of the buildings is damaged, the Daily Mail says that this discovery is evidence of the existence of the Illyrians, about whom little is known.

“The Illyrians were an ancient Indo-European tribe that lived in the western part of the Balkans and the coast of the Italian peninsula around 260 BC. Very little is known about their rulers, but researchers say that they have now been able to find evidence of the first palaces of the Illyrian kings in Montenegro. Archaeologists have found two palaces in Montenegro, which they describe as a great and important discovery,” writes the Daily Mail.

Archaeologists from Warsaw have started the study of the area since 2000, while the professor who led the study, Piotr Dyczek: “All the data we have show that we have discovered a palace complex of the rulers of Illyria, belonging to King Bardhyl and Teuta. Bardhyl was the founder of the Illyrian kingdom, while after his death it is believed that Queen Teuta led the Illyrian empire.”.

The location of the buildings, as well as the techniques used for their construction are unique, compared to other examples of Illyrian architecture. Professor Dyczek added that: “It is a rare case in archaeology.”.

The professor explained that the palace is thought to have been burnt down by a violent attack and a second palace has been built on top of it. “The second palace had limestone floors, decorative blocks, and a wide entrance with wooden doors,” he adds.
