The history of modern entrepreneurship is full of journeys that resemble movie scripts, but few cases are as poignant and impressive as Samir Mane's journey. Albania's only billionaire did not build his empire in the living rooms of the wealthy elite, nor did he inherit a large fortune. Instead, he started from absolute zero, carrying in his luggage the traumatic memories of one of Europe's harshest and most isolated regimes, to lead today a multinational group of dozens of companies and to be the main strategic partner of the Greek \u201cJumbo\u201d in a giant global expansion.<\/p>\n

The difficult years in Kor\u00e7a and escaping with a fake visa
\nSamir Mane was born on Christmas Eve 1967 in Kor\u00e7a, Albania, and grew up under the oppressive and authoritarian communist regime of Evver Hoxha, a period historians have described as the harshest in the Balkans. With a total ban on travel abroad, the lack of personal property and the systematic suppression of all freedoms, Albania had become the most economically underdeveloped country in Europe.<\/p>\n

As a young man, Mane studied geology at the University of Tirana, while working hard to survive. However, in 1991, the fall of the regime and the deep economic crisis that followed signaled a great wave of mass migration. While thousands of his countrymen chose neighboring Greece, often facing hardship and prejudice, the then 24-year-old Samir secured a fake visa and fled to Austria, with just $100 in his pocket. He spent more than six months in a refugee camp in Vienna, during which time he taught himself German and worked as a translator. Soon after, taking advantage of government benefits, he moved into a small apartment with other refugees and began studying geology at the University of Vienna.
