TIRANA EXPLODES AS ALBANIAN STUDENTS CLASH WITH POLICE FOR SIXTH DAY, DEMANDING SOCIALIST LEADER EDI RAMA'S HEAD
\nViolent clashes have engulfed Albania's capital for the sixth day in a row, as student-led protesters clash with riot police, throw torches and demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. The unrest, rooted in months of anger over corruption, rising education costs, scarce jobs and a luxury beach resort deal linked to Jared Kushner, has spread beyond Tirana with crowds throwing stones, burning barricades and fighting armored police cordons.
\nRiot units have used tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets and smoke grenades against demonstrators who throw stones, Molotov cocktails and firecrackers. Government buildings, banks and road infrastructure were damaged. Police report hundreds of injuries on both sides and hundreds of arrests since the violence intensified in midweek. The shops were blocked. Municipal employees removed the cobblestones. Parliament sessions were canceled while the capital was locked down. Rama, leader of the Socialist Party in power since 2013 and recently elected to a fourth term, has refused to resign. \u201cWe will not submit to violence\u201d, he declared. In video speeches, he blamed a \u201cforeign hand\u201d and insisted that the riots \u201chave absolutely nothing to do with the difficulties, problems or legitimate aspirations\u201d of ordinary Albanians. He framed the choice as EU membership until 2028-2030 versus chaos: \u201cDo they want this, or do they want the EU?\u201d His government denies systemic corruption, while offering limited talks on tuition fees.<\/p>\n
Protesters dispute this definition. A 19-year-old named Enea told reporters that the government is \u201cpushing us to the limits\u201d and that his message to Rama is simple: \u201cLet's resign as soon as possible before everything burns down.\u201d Another student, Lora, declared: \u201cThis is a revolution. We are tired of peaceful protests. We will not stop until Rama resigns.\u201d Crowds chant \u201cRama, resign\u201d outside the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister's office. Organizers and participants describe months of largely ignored peaceful marches that began as the \u201cFlamingo Revolution\u201d against the sale of protected coastal wetlands \u2014 home to flamingos and other wildlife \u2014 to a multibillion-dollar luxury development backed by Kushner's Affinity Partners. Rama has supported the project as modernization.
\nThe protests highlight deeper failures under more than a decade of socialist rule: high education costs with little return, youth emigration and a perception that elites make deals while ordinary Albanians face stagnant opportunities. Rama's government has portrayed the violence as the work of foreigners and political opponents instead of a real confrontation with its past. Businesses have called for calm as the damage spreads.
